“What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religion is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world.”
James 1:27 (Today’s English Version)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. We praise the Lord God for all He is doing in our lives and in the ministry here in Peru, for filling us with His Holy Spirit to guide and direct each of our steps, and for pouring out His grace upon us through His precious Son, Jesus Christ. We hope and pray that He has been blessing you wonderfully during this past month and that your life has been filled with His glorious riches and mercy.  We want to give you special thanks for your continued prayers for us and support of the ministry in Peru.  We definitely see the results of your prayers for us and for the ministry here.  You are special people called by our Lord Jesus Christ to minister to His children.  Thank you for your faithfulness to His calling.  Thank you for your love for Him, for us, and for His children.

The work here in Peru has grown considerably over the past several years, and we find ourselves in need of additional support to maintain the work here in Peru.  Because of this, we will be returning to the States for 4 months from November 2012 through February 2013.  We have not been back for any length of time since 2005.  We hope to visit and catch up with as many of you as we can in this time.  We would like to stay in the States longer, but our Peruvian visa does not allow us to do so.

We hope to add new supporters to those of you who currently support the work here in Peru, and would like to ask for your help in doing this.  If you would be willing to introduce us to persons you know that might be interested in supporting the work here, we would be deeply grateful.  We are not looking for persons who can give large amounts of money, but those who would be willing to contribute $10.00, $20.00, or more per month to help with the work.  Of course if someone wanted to give a large offering, we would gladly accept it.  We would appreciate it if you would consider hosting a gathering in your home of around 15 persons who

might share this interest, and allow us to come and present the ministry to them.   If you would not be able to host a gathering, but know of someone that might be interested, please share their contact information with us, and we will gladly get in touch with them.

In September, we had a very busy and fruitful month.  Covenant United Methodist Church from Dothan, Alabama came and conducted a medical campaign with us in Chongos Bajo, a small town which is about 30-45 minutes from where we live in Huancayo.  Chongos Bajo is a town where there is a lot of idolatry, and people come there to worship the oldest cross in Peru.
We conducted the medical campaign right across the street from this cross, and many people were there worshiping it. There were also candles around the cross, and many people take the melted wax from these candles to fortune tellers to find out about their future.

People worshipping the cross in Chongos Bajo.

In spite of the abundance of idolatry, the medical campaign went exceptionally well. We had Peruvian workers help us from 4 different churches in this area. There were 1025 people attended in this campaign.  The medical doctors attended 823 people; the eye doctor attended 127 people, and the dentist attended 75 people. The best part of all was that 484 people accepted the Lord Jesus Christ for the first time, and 21 people were reconciled to Him.  Please pray that the people in Chongos Bajo who will be doing the follow up on these new believers will be filled with the Holy Spirit as they encourage the new believers in their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. We already have discipleship groups in this area, so these groups will be a big help to the new believers.

Sharing the Gospel to one of the patients during the medical mission.

During this campaign, we met many people who had special needs, and it was an honor and a privilege to pray for them and to tell them how much God loves them.  One young boy, Saul, was an orphan who lives with his uncle and his aunt.  Unfortunately, they don’t even give him food all of the time, so we were able to give him lunch each day.  One of the pastors from the area is going to pray and help him when she can.  Also, we met another family that had a lot of problems. The father abused the 2 year old, Sissi, and because of this her 16 year old sister, Usvina, decided to not go to school anymore to protect her sister. Their brother, Gustavo, has leukemia. Their oldest brother, Pedro, who is 11 years old, lives in Lima in an orphanage, and he is in trouble because of robbery. The mom, Nanci, is not at home much because she works. The father has abandoned them all. Many other women that we attended in the campaign had husbands that didn’t support them in the home at all, or they were widows.  Although we can’t solve these people’s problems, we know the importance of prayer, and that nothing is impossible with God. Please pray that God will meet the physical and spiritual needs of the people in Chongos Bajo.

In addition, Pastor Beto, Arthur, and Mary Alice conducted leadership workshops in Molinos and Huanuco, and they both went really well. Sarvia Duran, a young lady who has been to several leadership workshops and participated in the Mission Society training, gave a wonderful testimony in the workshop in Molinos about how she has begun discipleship groups with youth in her community in Panao. There are many non-believers in the groups, and several of the youth that are Christians have begun their own discipleship groups with other youth. One young man, Juan, that was in the workshop, even leads the whole church in doing inductive Bible studies. God is really working through Sarvia and these youth, and we praise Him for that.

Workshop attendees in Molinos.  Left to Right:  Sarvia, Manuel, Arthur, Jhon, Alberto, Agober, Predesvilda, Armando, Clotilda, Leonida, Jenny, and Lorio

In the workshop in Huanuco, there were 9 pastors from different churches in the area in addition to other participants, and these pastors were very excited about beginning discipleship groups. Several of them asked that we give them a copy of the CD of the Kid’s Club lessons written by Mary Alice, so we did that.  Please pray that God will give all of the participants in these workshops His wisdom and courage to start their own discipleship groups, so that more people can grow in their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

We celebrated Mary Beth’s birthday this month.  She turned 19 years old on September 18th, but we celebrated the Sunday before this, because we were not going to be at home on her birthday.  Of course we had Oreo pie, which is one of her favorite desserts.  She is maturing and is doing a great job being a mom, and her son, Dominic is very precious to us.

On September 30th, Arthur and Ricardo Nattery will be traveling to the jungle to see what is going on with the agricultural project.  There is a good chance that the papers for the title will be completed.  Also, Arthur hopes to document the progress of completing the road to the land, and the progress of the project.  Please pray that God will put His angels around them, and will give them favor in the eyes of the officials.
Please be in prayer for each one of our workers and for each one of the ministries and projects, the discipleship ministry, the evangelism and church planting ministry, the prayer ministry, and the work to self-sustain these ministries.  Please continue to pray for financial support for the ministries both from Peruvian sources and U.S. sources.  Please continue to be in prayer for the continued growth in the ministries here in Peru.  Please continue to pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to awaken and change hearts among the people of Peru.

Please give praise to the Lord for bringing us additional persons called to be part of the missionary team in Peru.  Covenant with us to continue in prayer for the young adult leadership team.   Please pray for the leaders of the churches in Peru, and for their spiritual protection and growth in the Lord Jesus.  Also be in prayer for Billy and Laurie Drum, Ash and Audra McEuen, Martin and Tracy Reeves, Louise ReimerTheresa Anderson, Tim and Jennifer Goshorn, Paul and Kelly Wiegert, and their families.  All are missionaries with the Mission Society that currently or will soon be working in Peru. Please pray for our safety as we travel, and that we will boldly speak God's Word wherever we go.

We pray that Jesus will continue to give you hope to live each day for Him, and we also pray that God is drawing you closer and closer to Him every day. God bless you.  We love you.

Yours in Christ,

“You have changed my sadness into a joyful dance; you have taken away my sorrow and surrounded me with joy. So I will not be silent; I will sing praise to you.  Lord, you are my God; I will give you thanks forever.”  Psalm 30: 11-12.  (Today’s English Version)

In August, we were very happy to be able to stay in Huancayo and conduct our normal ministry activities.  We were able to pray for some more people using the “Sozo” tools.  One couple was married, and we prayed for both of them.  In the past, they had some problems in their marriage, but God is freeing them to love each other with His love.  We are so thankful for what God has done in their marriage.  We also saw the Lord Jesus restore a man who had tried to take his own life.  He is now working with a deep sense of purpose in his life.

Arthur’s Friday night discipleship group is going well.  Several new people have joined the group.  The Holy Spirit continues to work through Arthur as he leads this group.  Each week God is touching people’s hearts in a beautiful way to become closer to Him. Please pray that each member of this group will be faithful to continue to come each week so that they can grow more passionate in their love for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Mary Alice’s sexual purity group with girls is going well, although like most groups, several girls have dropped out.  Drawing from past experience, God brings the people that He wants to these groups that are serious about loving Him.  In this culture, people never talk about sexual purity or sexual integrity with their parents or with people in the church, and sexual promiscuity is very common with singles and married people.  About 75% of all women are abused in some way.  Please pray that these girls will share what they have learned about the importance of sexual purity with others, and that God will free the people here from their strongholds in this area.

Arthur has been busy this month preparing for the medical campaign that we will be holding with Covenant United Methodist Church from Dothan, Alabama in Chongas Bajo, which is a small town about 30 – 45 minutes from our house in Huancayo. We are excited about this campaign, because we already have Peruvians leading discipleship groups in this area.  Please pray that God will touch the hearts of many people in this area to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

Arthur is still working on the agricultural project in Pangoa.  The first 25 acres of the site has been cleared and planting of the first crops should start in September.  The road to the site has now been constructed to within five kilometers of the project.   Arthur and Ricardo are working on forming another company to run the farm project to take advantage of recent tax laws that give breaks to organizations that are involved in developing this area of the jungle.  This will result in a savings of 19% in sales taxes and a reduction from 30% to 10% on earnings.  Please be in prayer that the project will continue to move ahead and that God will bless it, so that it will start producing income to support the ministry in the next 2 to 3 years.
A reward for one of the workers clearing the land.

Our son Joshua worked for the summer in the garage at Toccoa Falls College.  Mainly he worked on cars during this time and other odd jobs. We felt like it would be better for him to work for the summer instead of coming to Peru, but we really missed seeing him. He has a way of making everyone laugh, and the children in the Kid’s Club really like him a lot.  His classes began August 27th, and please pray that God will continue to guide him in everything that he does. He is studying to be a middle school teacher.

We are very thankful to God because Mary Beth finally received her Peruvian carnet, and she will be able to work and get paid when she is ready to get a job here in Peru. Also, our plans are finalized for coming to the states, so we are excited about that. We will be sorry to leave our Peruvian friends for 4 months, but it will be great to see both our families. We will even get to spend Christmas with our families for the first time in 12 years.

Before we come to the states, we have 4 more leadership workshops.  Three of these workshops will be outside of Huancayo:  one in Molina, one in Arequipa, and one in Huanuco.  Please pray that God will give us perseverance to complete all the things that we need to before coming to the states and that these workshops will go well.

“Be persistent in prayer, and keep alert as you pray, giving thanks to God.  At the same time pray also for us, so that God will give us a good opportunity to preach his message about the secret of Christ.”  Colossians 4:2-3 (Today’s English Version)

In July, the Drums, the McEuens, Louise Reimer, and we hosted the three week long, new missionary training of The Mission Society.  Because the cross cultural experience is so important, they also invited missionaries from Peru, Ecuador, and Kenya to come this year. The training went very well, and the participants seemed to be very mature in Christ. We are very thankful that many of the Peruvians that work with us received this training, so that they can use it in their ministry, and so that they will know our vision.  Please pray that these Peruvian national missionaries will be able to teach others what they learned in the training, and that it will be very fruitful for the kingdom.

Darrell Whiteman congratulating Manuel Villar of Peru.

We also had the privilege of having Meghan Maloney help us in the ministry during the middle of July until August the 2nd.  She is from Riverstone Church in Marietta, Georgia.  She teaches Spanish at a middle school in the states, and is praying about being a full time missionary in the future.  She did a great job, and participated in all of the discipleship groups that Arthur teaches, the sexual purity group that Mary Alice teaches, and the Kid’s Clubs. The girls in the sexual purity group really enjoyed getting to meet her. She enjoyed participating in part of the missionary training.

In September, we have a medical campaign in Chongas Bajo with Covenant United Methodist Church from Dothan, Alabama, and Arthur and Meghan have been preparing and packing medicines and supplies for that campaign. Please pray that God will continue to guide Meghan in everything that she does, and that she will grow closer to Christ each day.

The Kid’s Club that met in a field in Pichcus moved to a park called Parque de la Juventud in May.  We had agreed to paint the stage in this park, so that it would look better.  Ivan Cruz, who lives with us, and Oscar, Mary Beth’s husband, painted most of the stage. Ivan also found a lady who could paint very well, and she painted the scene in the middle of the stage.  Ivan designed a drawing for children; it was a picture of Jesus as a superhero. Because one of the children’s favorite songs in this Club is “Jesus is my Superhero,” the lady painted Jesus flying through the air as a superhero. She also painted these words on the wall of the stage – “Jesus is the true superhero,” and “He rose from the dead to give us life.” Hopefully this will encourage people to get to know the Lord Jesus Christ. More new children have been coming to the park recently to get involved in the Club, and we praise God for that.  Please pray that God will continue to work through the teachers as they teach the children, and that the children would have a true passion to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. There are some adults that come from time to time, and we really appreciate Louise Reimer, who teaches them each week.  Please also pray that the Lord Jesus would call additional teachers to this ministry.

Señora Rosario painting the mural at the Kid’s Club park.

Arthur and I were able to pray using the “Sozo” tools with one man this month, and we have scheduled another meeting with him to continue praying for him. We are so thankful that the Lord brings us people that want and need prayer, deep healing, and freedom.  It is such a blessing to be able to pray for others, and see the Lord Jesus free them, heal them and save them. Please also pray that we will use our opportunities that God gives us to share His love with others.

We will be coming to the states at the end of October of this year until the end of February for furlough.  If you or your friends would be interested in hosting a small group meeting, we would love to come and share the great things that God is doing in Peru. Please feel free to contact us about sharing.

So Jesus said to those who believed in him, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  (Today’s English Version)

In May we had a great time doing another Leadership Workshop in La Merced.  People from several different churches participated, and they all were very excited about learning about the Lord Jesus and how to be mentors to others to help them grow in the faith.  One pastor who participated in the workshop, Valentino Barro, goes to another town in the jungle, Satipo, each Saturday to lead a discipleship group with some businessmen from 9:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.  They eat together, and study the Bible together. God is moving in a great way in La Merced, and we praise Him for that.  Please pray that Jesus will continue to call people from this area to lead discipleship groups and to grow closer to Christ.

Leadership workshop participants in La Merced (left to right); Yenet, Mary Alice, Antonio, Gregorio, Ernesto, Hector, Desy, Alberto, Edgar, Valentino, Sandra, Martin.

Arthur and Mary Alice were blessed again to pray for another person using the “Sozo” method.  “Sozo” is a Greek word that basically means:  To save, to heal, and to deliver.  It is amazing to see how God frees people just because they forgive others. The lady who we prayed with is so much better now, both spiritually and emotionally, and we are so thankful to God for that. We have an awesome God who has shown us that we can be freed through Him.

Mary Alice began a Sexual Purity study with about 10 girls from the university. They were very interested to learn not only about being pure, but also about how to study the Bible and evangelize.  Please pray that God will give Mary Alice wisdom as she leads this group, and that each girl will grow closer to Christ.

Some of you who have come to Peru on a team know Willy Saldado.  He was a waiter in Caramba’s for years, and years ago, he asked Arthur if he could talk with him in our house.  He wanted to know what was different about our family, because we seemed so happy. Arthur shared about Jesus with him, and he accepted Christ. He became a part of Arthur’s discipleship group, and also participated in the evangelism class that we taught. In addition, he taught the Shoeshine boys about Jesus with Arthur; however, his wife, Margot, had been resistant to receiving Christ. Recently, she kept breaking out with a rash all over her body.  She would go to the doctor, and he would give her an   injection for the rash. The rash went away for a little while, but it always came back.  Willy told Margot that Jesus would heal her, and he and his children gathered together and prayed for Margot. God healed her completely.  As a result, she accepted Christ, and even realized that her friend needed to know Jesus.  Willy and she visited the lady, and Willy shared the gospel with her friend, and she accepted Christ. If we are faithful just to share Christ with one person, God will multiply that tremendously. Please pray that God will continue to work in Margot’s life and her friend’s life.

Arthur spent a lot of time this month purchasing and packing medicines for two medical campaigns that will occur in June; one in Shankivironi that the Drum’s will lead, and one in Tinyari.  He also spent a lot of time on the logistics for the new missionary training that The Mission Society will have in July.  There will be 89 persons attending the training, most from the states, but several from other countries, including 25 from Peru.  This will be the second year that the Peru team has hosted this training.

Group from the new missionary training event in 2011.

We will be coming home for four months starting in November of this year, in order to try to raise additional support for the ministry.  If you would like for us to share about the Peru ministry with one of your church groups, Sunday school classes, or a group of friends interested in missions in your home, please don’t hesitate to contact us to schedule an opportunity.
